You may not need us
If your insurer reports to the DMV, your smog result is on file, and you have no unpaid parking tickets, the DMV's online renewal usually works in a few minutes with no service fee. Come to us when one of those pieces is missing or the hold is unclear.
What this service covers
California registration runs for one year. Before it ends, the DMV sends a notice listing the fees due and any smog requirement. Payment is due by the expiration date on your registration card, a specific day, not just the month on your sticker. Once the DMV accepts the renewal, it mails a new sticker with a new card to the address on the record.
Who needs it
- Owners who never received a renewal notice, or lost the one they had.
- Drivers whose online renewal was rejected because of a smog, insurance, or parking ticket hold.
- People who moved and need the address fixed before the sticker goes out.
- Small business owners with several vehicles coming due in the same month.

What to bring: Registration Renewal

Both are on your registration card.
- Proof of California insurance
Bring the card in case the DMV record does not show your policy.

- Payment for the DMV fees
Cards, bank account payments, cash at offices or kiosks, or money orders by mail.
- Notice of Change of Address (DMV 14), if you moved
Can also be done online. Allow three business days before renewing.
- Application for Replacement Plates, Stickers, Documents (REG 156), if your card or sticker is missing

When you might need this service
Renewing online with the DMV
The DMV site takes your plate number, the last five digits of the VIN, and a card or bank account. It also needs your insurer to report your policy electronically, any smog result already on file, and no unpaid parking tickets. If all of that is in place, you probably do not need us. If one piece is missing, the online system stops you.
No renewal notice arrived
The DMV mails notices about 60 days before the expiration date. A missing notice usually means an old address on the record. The fees are due on time either way. We can help you complete a DMV 14 change of address, then prepare the renewal using your plate number and the last five of the VIN. If the date has already passed, our page on late or expired registration shows how the penalties stack up.
Smog hold on the renewal
Los Angeles County is one of the counties where the DMV requires a smog inspection at renewal unless the vehicle is exempt. If your notice calls for one, the renewal stays open until a station sends a passing result to the DMV, even after you pay. Gas vehicles from 1975 or older, electric vehicles, and gas vehicles less than eight model years old are exempt.
Lost sticker or lost card
A missing sticker or card is replaced with form REG 156, or through the DMV's online replacement service when the vehicle is eligible. The online option is not available in the 30 days before your renewal is due. Our replacement plates and stickers page covers the details.
How it works with us
Call us or send an appointment request
Tell us the plate number and what happened when you tried to renew. We set a time to meet at our North Hollywood office.
We review the record with you
We go over your notice, insurance, smog status, and any ticket or address problem. You leave with a plain list of what the DMV still needs.
We prepare the renewal paperwork
We complete the forms with you, including a DMV 14 or a REG 156 when one is needed, with the fee amounts checked against the DMV fee calculator.
The DMV mails your sticker
Once the DMV processes the renewal, the sticker and registration card go to the address on the record. That is why we fix the address first.
Fees
DMV fees are set by the State of California, not by us. Only the DMV decides the final total, which depends on your vehicle, the transaction, and any penalties already on the record.
- The DMV sets every registration fee. A standard renewal includes a $76 registration fee, a $34 CHP fee, a vehicle license fee of 0.65 percent of the vehicle's value, a transportation improvement fee between $33 and $231 depending on value, plus county fees that vary. (DMV source, checked 2026-10-12)
- There is no grace period. Paying one to ten days late adds a $10 registration late fee, a $10 CHP late fee, and 10 percent of the vehicle license fee. The penalty steps up at 11 days, 31 days, one year, then two years. (DMV source, checked 2026-10-12)
- Gas vehicles less than eight model years old skip the smog inspection at renewal. The DMV charges a $20 smog abatement fee instead. (DMV source, checked 2026-10-12)
Our service charge
Every transaction is different, so our service charge depends on the paperwork your case needs. Tell us about it when you call or send a request and we will explain our charge before you decide to proceed. DMV fees, taxes, and penalties are separate.
Common issues and special cases
You paid, but the registration still is not renewed
Payment alone does not finish a renewal. If the DMV is waiting on a smog result or a ticket clearance, the registration is not valid until that item is resolved. The DMV status page shows where it stands.
Your insurance is not showing with the DMV
Insurers must report private vehicle policies to the DMV electronically. If the DMV never receives proof, it can suspend the registration. A California card that names the vehicle correctly usually clears it up.
You will not drive the vehicle this year
If the vehicle is going into storage, you can file for planned nonoperation instead of paying the full renewal. The DMV charges a filing fee for a PNO, but no renewal fees come due while it is on record.
Questions about registration renewal
Can I do my DMV registration renewal online instead of coming in?
Yes, most owners can. The DMV's online renewal works when your insurance is reported electronically, smog is on file, and there are no unpaid parking tickets. If any of those is missing, an appointment with us saves a wasted trip.
How long does it take to get the sticker after renewing?
The DMV lists about one week for online or phone renewals, about two weeks by mail, with kiosks printing the sticker right away when all requirements are met. Those are the DMV's estimates, not promises.
What if I never got my renewal notice?
The fees are still due by the expiration date. The DMV says to contact it or use the fee calculator if no notice arrives about 60 days before the date. Check the address on the record, since notices sent to an old address are destroyed.
Is there a grace period for vehicle registration renewal in California?
No. Penalties start the day after the expiration date on your registration card. Our registration fees page explains how the penalty tiers work.
Do I need a smog check to renew?
It depends on the vehicle. Los Angeles County requires one at renewal unless the vehicle is exempt. Your notice says whether a smog inspection is required this cycle, and whether it must be done at a STAR station.
Can I renew with unpaid parking tickets?
Not online. The DMV requires every parking ticket on the record to be paid or cleared first. If a ticket was dismissed in court, the court's clearance paper goes to the DMV with your renewal, by mail or at a DMV office.
